Award-winning filmmaker Ella Manzheeva was born in the Russian republic of Kalmykia and graduated from film school in Moscow.
She is the first Kalmyk film director, and her feature debut, The Gulls, premiered at the 2015 Berlinale.
She is currently in postproduction on her second dramatic feature, White Road, selected for Cinéfondation L'Atleier of the Cannes Film Festival.
